Assisted Living vs Nursing Homes
Many people have a common misconception that assisted living facilities and nursing homes are one in the same. This could not be further from the truth. They are really very different from one another. If you have a loved one that is unable to live on their own, then you may be considering one of these as an option for them. Take a look at the differences and decide which of these facilities is the best for your loved one. You will likely want them to be in the best place possible, and that means that you must do your research ahead of time to learn which will be the most viable option.
About Assisted Living
When a person is living in an assisted living facility, they are free to spend the days doing what they want to do. They are able to get around, but they may need some assistance when it comes to taking care of themselves. They may need some help grooming themselves, getting a bath, getting dressed, and fixing them something to eat. They can still usually make a lot of the decisions that they need to make about their lives. Generally, there is not any sort of medical care involved with living in an assisted living facility. It is really more like apartment living, except the residents get the help they need when they need it. It is really independent and has a lot of privacy- which is great for some adults.
About Nursing Homes
Nursing homes are really centered around getting medical attention for those that need it. The people that live in a nursing home are in need of health care on a regular basis. Nurses work around the clock there to provide the medical attention that they need. If someone is disabled, either mentally or physically, then they may need to live in a nursing home. The rooms here will not look as much like apartments, instead they will look more like hospital rooms and have hospital beds. A nursing home lacks the privacy and independence of an assisted living center. Once a patient regains their health in a nursing home, they may want to consider assisted living.
Choosing Which One is Right
Now that you know the difference between an assisted living facility and a nursing home, it should be fairly easy to make your decision as to which one is the right one for you. You will have to make sure that you get your loved one medical attention in a nursing home setting if you are unable to provide this in your own home. If you just want to ensure that your loved one gets help when they need it, but not medical attention, then you may want to go the assisted living route. Talk to your loved one and see which one is the better option. Then talk to your family members about ways that you can afford to pay for it.
