Becoming a Nursing Home Volunteer Info

Just about anyone can volunteer in a nursing home. If you have considered becoming a volunteer, then you may really want to consider nursing homes. This type of volunteer work can be very rewarding, and you will likely find that you have a great time. Children, teens and adults can all volunteer in this type of setting to do different things around the home. Take a look at some of the best things that you can do when you volunteer at a nursing home.

Keep the Patients Company

One of the most important types of volunteer work in the nursing home is to keep the patients company. There are many patients in the nursing home that do not get frequent visitors. You can volunteer to go from room to room visiting with the patients and seeing if there is anything that you can do for them. Some may just want you to listen to them, some may want to hold a nice conversation, and others may want to play a card game or other sort of game. Either way, you are sure to find it to be a rewarding experience when you visit with the elderly in the nursing homes in your area.

Help Clean Up and Restock Supplies

Another job that you may be able to help with is cleaning up and restocking supplies. The employees at the nursing home are very busy throughout the day and they often times do not get around to getting everything done. With the help of volunteers, the shelves in the nursing home can always be stocked with everything that the nurses and CNA’s may need throughout the days. This is a great job for teens, and is often times referred to as being a candy striper.

Serve Meals to the Patients

You may also want to volunteer to deliver meals to the patients. Meals are prepared at the nursing home, but sometimes it is nice for the patient to get their meal from someone other than a cafeteria worker. See about volunteering to take meals to the patients and give them a little variety to their day. When they see you, they will usually want to talk with you. Just be prepared for a few conversations along the way.

Safety First

When you volunteer at a nursing home, you will want to make sure that you put safety first. This means that you need to wash your hands when you enter and leave a patient’s room. You will also want to make sure that you do not volunteer if you may be sick or under the weather. Most of the elderly patients that are in nursing homes are more susceptible to getting sick. Their immune systems may be weak, and if you are sick they do not need to be around you. Instead, just wait until you are free from your sickness before you decide to volunteer again. The facility will greatly appreciate your concern for safety and wellness.
