Common Activities and Games Played In Nursing Homes

One thing that draws people to the nursing home living is that it offers many games and activities for the elderly residents. Activities are very important as they help to pass the time for the residents. Many times these patients do not get visitors very often, and that may mean that they get lonely or bored. Instead of letting the patients sit there idle and bored, it is a good idea to have activities going on from time to time in the nursing home. Here are a few activities that they may have to offer.

Interactive Group Games

Interactive group games are a very important part of nursing home life. Many times they will play games such as Bingo. Bingo is really fun because it does not require a lot of activity, but it is still very exciting. This makes it the perfect game for elderly people. Other games that they may play include card games. There are a variety of games that can be played with cards, and they may even make up a few as they go!

Puzzles and Mind Games

Games and puzzles are a great way to stimulate the mind. Puzzles can keep residents occupied for hours on end, which means they will not have to worry about boredom. There are word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, number puzzles and much more. Having an area for puzzles is a great idea. You can let the residents work together to complete puzzles and once they are done, they can start on a new one. The sense of accomplishment that they feel is great once the puzzles are complete.

Dances and Musical Events

Another great thing that you can do when you are running a nursing home is host a dance or a musical event. While not every patient is well enough to dance, they can all usually enjoy the music. You can have someone come in and play the types of music that the elderly people love, or you can have someone play the piano. Most everyone loves singing, dancing and listening to music.

Group Outings

Some of the people who live in the nursing home may be well enough to take an outing. Sometimes there are events in the local area, including festivals, shows and movies. For the residents that are able, an outing outside the nursing home may be a great change of scenery. It may be just what they need to boost their self esteem and feel better.

As you can see, there are a variety of things for the elderly to do when they live in a nursing home. You really have to consider these as great avenues of entertainment for the residents of the nursing homes. It is important to supply them with fun activities and things to do while they are there. Talk to the residents about things that they would enjoy doing to get more ideas for activities that you can provide in the nursing home.
